Beryl var. Emerald
Kenticha mine, Ethiopia
Kenticha mine, Kenticha pegmatite field, Sidamo-Borana Province, Ethiopia
A stunning 54.55 carat emerald crystal from the new finds in the Kenticha Pegmatite Field, outside Shakiso, in the Sidamo-Borana Province of Ethiopia! This crystal is actually comprised of two intergrown crystals, that create a pleasing step-like formation. The color is a deep, vibrant emerald green and a minute quartz crystal adorns one the lower terminations. There are some biotite inclusions on the backside of the crystal that add a nice contrast of color to the piece. This new emerald deposit was discovered in 2015, to the best of my knowledge, but it has been only recently that many specimens have hit the market. I was fortunate enough to acquire a sizeable batch of fine crystals, along with some gem rough that I’m having cut. Joe Budd photo.
