Beryl var. Emerald
Kenticha mine, Ethiopia
Kenticha mine, Kenticha pegmatite field, Sidamo-Borana Province, Ethiopia
A wonderful 59.1 carat emerald group on a bit of white feldspar matrix from the new finds in the Kenticha Pegmatite Field, outside of Shakiso, in the Sidamo-Borana Province of Ethiopia! This beautiful specimen features a group of parallel-growth crystals that have grown together to create a tower-like formation. The white feldspar matrix in the back, as well as minor black biotite mica inclusions really give this specimen a contrast of color (not to mention the rich emerald green color). The crystal glows when backlit and has nice gem sections near the terminations. The crystal is well formed and the terminations are intact. This new emerald deposit was discovered in 2015, to the best of my knowledge, but it has been only recently that many specimens have hit the market. I was fortunate enough to acquire a sizeable batch of fine crystals, along with some gem rough that I’m having cut. Joe Budd photo.
