Beryl var. Emerald
Kenticha mine, Ethiopia
Kenticha mine, Kenticha pegmatite field, Sidamo-Borana Province, Ethiopia
A beatiful 42.05 carat emerald crystal from the new finds in the Kenticha Pegmatite Field, outside of Shakiso, in the Sidamo-Borana Province of Ethiopia! This crystal is actually comprised of two intergrown crystals that have grown together in a parallel-growth formation. The crystal is sharp with a well-defined termination that exhibits wonderful, complex growth hillocks. The luster is waxy yet high and the specimen glows when backlit. This one also exhibits nice color zoning and is completely free of any damage. This new emerald deposit was discovered in 2015, to the best of my knowledge, but it has been only recently that many specimens have hit the market. I was fortunate enough to acquire a sizeable batch of fine crystals, along with some gem rough that I’m having cut. Joe Budd photo.
